1. How The Bike Wise Challenge Works
What is The Bike Wise Challenge?
The Bike Wise Challenge is a free, fun competition which encourages organisations to get their staff on bikes and help them to remember the joys and benefits of riding a bike. The aim of the Challenge is to get as many of your colleagues as possible to ride a bike for just 10 minutes or more over the four week Challenge period, from 1 February to 28 February 2010. Experienced cyclists can help mentor the "newbies" and support them to give it a go.
Teams will compete to see who can get the highest percentage of staff cycling. Organisations/departments that get the highest percentage of their staff cycling for their size category will be in to win prizes. There are 5 size categories in 15 regions, giving any organisation/department, big or small, a good chance of winning!
People can ride wherever they feel comfortable and at anytime over the Challenge, for just 10 minutes/2 kms or more. It’s not about cycling the most kilometres, it's all about getting more people to experience and remember how fun and easy cycling can be.
As well as the health benefits, cycling offers a cost-effective way to commute, with savings made on petrol, parking fees and even gym memberships.
It's easy to take part, just register here and let the fun begin!
There are heaps of prizes that you and your colleagues could win just by taking part, including 3 Avanti bikes, cycling gear, Avanti and Ground Effects vouchers, workplace treats and loads more! Find out about prizes here.
It's easy to take part!
- Register on this website
- Ride a bike at least once between 1 February and 28 February 2010*
- Log your cycling on the Bike Wise Challenge website
- Encourage your colleagues to have fun riding a bike too!
* You can ride wherever you feel comfortable, whenever you like during The Bike Wise Challenge period, for at least 10 minutes or 2 kms.
* Using motorcycles, scooters, static bikes or exercycles does not count as riding a bike. People will need to ride an actual bicycle for their participation to count.
How to Register
New to the Challenge?
Firstly, check if your organisation is already registered. If it is not registered, go to the Register Page and choose "Register an Organisation". Follow the process to register your organisation, and then register yourself as a participant in that organisation. You can also register your department and get some internal rivalry going.
Already registered in 2009?
If you registered for the Challenge last year then you won't need to register again. You can simply log back into the website, fill out a short survey and start logging your bike rides.
Now encourage as many of your colleagues as possible to visit the website, register themselves and hop on a bike just once (or more) during the Challenge!
Why are the 2009 results still showing?
The Bike Wise Challenge site keeps an ongoing tally of all trips ever logged on the site. It also calculates statistics and results for each separate challenge. When the 2010 Challenge begins on 1 February, you will be able to see statistics and results that relate specifically to this year, and only trips logged during the Challenge period (1-28 February) will count towards the results.
Our Goals for Bike Wise Challenge 2010
* Increase overall participation in the Bike Wise Challenge - to 700+ organisations and 15,000+ people.
* Achieve at least 25% participation by new and infrequent cyclists - you can help by encouraging these people in your organisation.
* Increase participation in key centres where there are congestion problems - Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
* Increase knowledge of and promote safe cycling.
* Increase the number of people still riding a bike after Bike Wise Month.
